Think of the forums as our online place to hold conversations in the form of posted messages.

During the course, you will be asked to share your ideas and practise using vocabulary in our forums.

You will find the links to the forum discussions inside the courses and the discussions are structured around specific questions and topics.

It’s nice to read previous discussions from other students and you can reply and comment on them. Or you can start your own discussion by clicking new discussion.

How does the forum benefit you?

There are 2 main benefits to the forum in Proficiency Project.

1st: Meaningful practice: when you write something down, you are forcing yourself to use English in an expressive and thoughtful way. Writing in English is one of the BEST ways to improve your fluency and activate what we cover in the modules.

2nd: Didactic. Not only do you practise new vocabulary and expressions, this is the point where I challenge you. You will get guidance and feedback from me and our teachers. I’ll give you honest feedback, corrections and suggestions on improvements you can make in order to make your English sound more natural and more like a native speaker.

Furthermore, you can learn a lot by reading previous discussion threads from other students and comments from teachers

How to get the most out of the forum

Participate and be pro-active!

Quite simply, if you don’t participate you’ll be missing out.

The easiest way to participate is by following the prompts in the courses.

To get the MOST out of the experience ui can:

Share your personal stories, experiences and opinions

Engage, encourage and support other students in the course

How to access the forums

Clicking Forums from the EDA panel will only show you forums that you have participated in – it takes you to your personal page. Here you can view forums that you have replied to, any forums you’ve marked as your favourite or any you have subscribed to.

To access all forums you need to click on Forums here in the menu. Here you can search, access by module, or scroll down the page to see the latest discussions.

To reply to a thread in a discussion, simply click reply, and post.

To subscribe to a forum that you find particularly interesting or useful, click here.

Or to mark a forum as a favourite, click the star.

I’d also ask you to take a look at the forum rules in the link below this video. The rules are to help ensure that the focus remain an enjoyable environment for everyone.

What is the Activation Project?

As you come to the end of each course you’ll see a lesson called Activation Project.

‘Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.’ –. (1)

The Activation Project is your opportunity to put everything you learn into practice,  in a context that is real, meaningful and relevant for you.

It’s also an opportunity to get feedback and corrections from me.

What kind of tasks will I find inside the Activation Project?

The tasks will differ from month to month. They will include speaking, writing, reading, listening and/or vocabulary development.

Do I have to make audio recordings? I feel embarrassed!

I know for many of you, the thought of recording yourself will make you want to crawl under your covers in bed and not come out! But I’m going to ask you to give it a try!

I want you to know that I’m the first person that hates doing this! I would rather eat my own arm than listen to my own voice or watch myself on video. I’m very shy and it does not come easy to me.

BUT …. for my students, for you guys in the programme, and for you guys who have already trusted me and taken digital course with me in the past, you’ll know that I’ve had to get over this fear.

If I want to create the same rapport online that I have with my students in the classroom, I’m not going to be able to do that if you don’t hear my voice or occasionally see my face.

So I started recording audio — I started doing this about a year ago at the beginning of this project. And then it became something so natural that I don’t even think about it anymore. It really doesn’t bother me at all.

Why am I telling you this?

The first reason is, it’s going to have to work both ways – because I want to get to know you as well. It can’t just be a one-way street! I want to hear from you. I want to hear you speaking English.

And the second reason, perhaps the MOST IMPORTANT reason, is because this practice of recording yourself is a fantastic way to improve your speaking skills. For more information about HOW this technique is so beneficial, read points 3 and 4 on the blog post below.

And at the end of the day, you only ever have to share the audio with me – your teacher, so there is absolutely no need for feeling embarrassment or anxiety.

What you’ll find is this:  you’ll do it once, you’ll do it twice and then by the third time, you’ll think nothing of it. You’ll actually see that it’s quite good fun and most importantly, you’ll see how much your English starts to improve.

Do I have to do the Activation project?

Let me just say that you are not obliged to hand in the tasks every month. I totally understand that it won’t always be possible to complete it, we are all busy people and sometimes life just gets in the way.

There will also be some of you who aren’t really interested in that side of it. Maybe you are doing Proficiency Project as a way just to keep your English brain active and as a way of maintaining your level, rather than working towards a higher level.

So there is no pressure to hand it in every month.

Having said that, for those of you who have joined this programme as a way of reaching a higher level, then obviously for you it is a really important part of the programme: activating what you learn, having feedback and being corrected by a teacher, for you guys, is pretty fundamental.

For those of you in that situation, I would say try your best to do the project every month.

And it’s a bit like anything else, the more effort you put into it, the more get out of it. It’s logical.
